Requirements
Here’s a handy reference on where to get Eclipse for the Mac. Version 3.7 (“Indigo”) installs nicely in Lion and seems to work okay, but our household hasn’t put it to a grueling acid test. Link to How to install Java JDK on Mac OS Video tells you how to download Eclipse IDE for Mac or MacOS.In this tutorial, we. The repository site URL is typically pre-populated in the list of software repositories when you install the Eclipse Platform or SDK. For more information about installing or updating software, see the Eclipse Platform Help.
The AVR Plugin has been successfully tested with Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.
The plugin has been tested with Eclipse 3.6 (Helios) and Eclipse 3.7 (Indigo). It may still work with Eclipse versions down to 3.4 (Ganymede), however this has not been tested and these antique Eclipse versions are not officially supported. Also the C/C++ Development Tools (CDT) Plugin is required to use the AVR Eclipse Plugin.
If you do not have Eclipse or a required version go to the eclipse.org downloads page to download the latest version. The Eclipse IDE for C/C++ Developers download package contains a suitable Eclipse IDE for running this plugin. Eclipse is self contained (does not require installation) and only needs to be unpacked.
It also needs a Java Runtime 6 (or higher).
Furthermore you need the AVR-GCC toolchain for AVR cross target development. But like the CDT Plugin for Eclipse itself, the AVR Plugin does not include a toolchain, it has to be installed separately before this plugin can be used.
If you don't have an AVR-GCC toolchain installed see here on what it is and where to get it.
Download
There are two ways to download the AVR Eclipse Plugin. Either via the update site or by downloading the plugin manually. The first method is recommended, but you need the manual download method if you want to try out beta releases or downgrade to an older version of the plugin.

Eclipse Editor's Review
Customizable, Powerful and Efficient Development
Eclipse or 'Indigo' as it is also known wears many hats, serving as a platform for software development and an open source community.
While the basic Eclipse SDK is intended for development in Java, various plug-ins allow for other programming languages to be supported including C++, PHP and Clojure. If you don't see what you need, you can write a plug-in of your own and contribute it to the community. Third party plug-ins are also supported. This use of plug-ins makes Eclipse incredibly customizable and lightweight.
Server development with remote debugging is also supported, as is Web Tools development and other options. The features and options are too numerous to mention, but the Java 7 and cross-platform WebKit support are particularly welcome.
The interface is clean and highly usable, and international users will be happy to know that multiple languages are supported. The Marketplace Client makes it easy to browse plug-ins. The drag and drop functionality generally makes for easy installation of your preferred solutions although some selections may not install smoothly. If you are updating a previous version of Eclipse, the 'import' feature allows for automatic installation of your previously used plug-ins - very handy!
Eclipse might seem a bit daunting if you are new to development, but even in that situation there is a wealth of supporting documentation and tutorials available.
App Pros: Open-source community, customizable via plug-ins, multiple human languages supported, multiple programming languages supported.
App Cons: None
Conclusion: Eclipse is a powerful, customizable and effective development platform offering support for multiple programming languages as well as a very nice open source community. It's hard to believe that it is free!
