Most users won't reclaim 1.5 GB. My 60 GB iPod has about 300 MB of album art (you can find the database by browsing the invisible files on the iPod). If you have lots of albums, you'll save a few hundred GB, since the dabatase is such that it only copies the art once for all the songs that have it. If, however, you have lots of individual songs, then you'll use a lot more space.

It probably depends on how big the image data is. And that can vary widely.
It probably depends on how big the image data is. And that can vary widely. I know it's blowing my own trumpet, but I posted a story a while back showing that the most obvious way to copy artwork (dragging from browser window straight into iTunes) will convert it to PNG format, which is often 5x or 10x bigger than the original JPG. (The alternative is to drag it onto your HD, and then drag that file onto iTunes, which preserves the format and size.)
Take my iPod as an example. Its 60GB is practically full with 12895 songs. Almost all of those have artwork, and a fair proportion of it is high-quality 500x500 from walmart.com. The iPod's Artwork folder takes up about half a GB, which isn't a lot considering. However, if all those had been converted to PNGs, then I'd expect that to be several GB.
So if you want to save space, first of all, make sure all your artwork isn't taking up lots more space than necessary. Only after that should you consider the drastic step of removing it all!

If it's converted to PNG, that's only on your Mac. When iTunes 'optimizes' the artwork for putting it on the iPod, it converts it to another format (I don't know which) and in only two sizes (I think it's 240x240 and 120x120). Hence the space savings.

How about a way to remove those silly 'extras' instead? Games, stop watch and such?
This is a good hint, as I don't like showing artwork on my iPod to begin with. Why? When a song with artwork is playing, even modest-length song names and album names have to scroll by - it's aggravating to wait for them to display. 'Happiness is a warm ... what?'
